October Fun!

I know what your thinking it's the middle of November and I am posting about October.  Well life got busy and I finally had the time to post what we did in October.

I change my calendar every month.  I don't know why but my kinders think it is so cool.  I also decorate my room for the holidays.  They all came in saying it was Halloween.  We had to talk at calendar time that Halloween wasn't until the 31st.

We started with reading The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything.  We practiced retelling the story.  You can get the cards here.

For one of our hands-on morning work tubs they made jack-o-lanterns.  I got the felt pieces from Targets dollar spot.  I swear I check that section out every time I go there.  You never know what you will find there.

We also did pumpkin investigations.  Each kinder brought in their own pumpkin.

One of my favorite activities to do with my kinders is our old lady projects.  We read There Was an Old Lady That Swallowed Some Leaves.  Each kinder made an old lady and wrote what fall thing they would swallow.  Even my boys love this activity.

We ended October with our "Fall" party.  We watched It's A The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, wrapped ourselves up as mummies, and decorated our pumpkins.

Our Class Pet

We had a surprise visit earlier this week.  A mysterious box showed up in our classroom after recess.  I was surprised as well since I was in a "meeting" with another teacher during recess. *wink wink*

Check out that excitement!  They could not wait to see what was in the box!

We were so surprised to see it was a fox.  The fox works perfectly for our woodland theme classroom.  Hmmmm....I wonder why?

Once we opened the box we got to pass her around.  One of them told me they saw her smile.  How sweet is that.

After we passed her around we had to name her.  There were many suggestions such as Elsa, Cinderella and even my name.  I had to draw the line there because that would be too confusing. In the end we ended up naming her Foxy.  We love being able to read to her and give her hugs when we get upset.  She is also a great listener.  Especially for those tattle tellers!

Apples

We have just finished up our apple activities last week.  My kinders had fun graphing, writing and learning about apples.  We started of our apple unit by tasting apples.  We made predictions which apples would be sweet, sour, the best and the worst.

Next we became science investigators. You can get the packet here.

We even made apple eruptions!  My kinders loved this activity.  They could have done this all day.

We made predictions if our apples would sink or float.

On our last day of our apple unit we made applesauce.  Only two of my kinders didn't like it.  All day they were saying they could smell the cinnamon.

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of our apple activities.

Color Week

Holy moly I can not believe we are in the middle of September already.  Last week we finished up our color week(s).  I wish I had taken more pictures of each color activity but sadly I didn't.  Here is a look of some of the activities.

Everyday we sang the song and highlighted the color word of the day.  You can find the songs here.

Red was first, we read The Little Red Hen and made this craft.

Next was green, we read Go Away Big Green Monster. You can find this craft here.
For purple we read Harlod and the Purple Crayon.  Then kinders drew a picture of where the purple crayon took them.  This student drew Disney World as you can see with the Mickey ears.  Look at that detail!

On blue day we read Blueberries For Sal and created our own bucket of blueberries.

For favorite color day we did a bunch of Brown Bear Activities.  I do not know where the original source of this is. If you do please let me know so I can give credit where credit is do.

On our last color day we made a rainbow hair coloring book. You can find this book here.

First Week Fun

The first week of school is over and I am exhausted!  Thankfully I am ready for the next week.  To start of the first day of school I created this chalkboard below.  I got the idea from First Grade Blue Skies.

We had a great time learning the different routines in the classroom along with learning each others names.

My kinders loved putting their name in the song "The Wheels on the Bus".  You can get this activity along with other name fun activities here.

We also learned about fancy and plain cake pictures.   I start this early on so my kinders know what I expect when they are coloring.

Kinders learned where we can read in the classroom.  We practiced the different places to read and will be starting our reading stamina next week.

My Classroom

After weeks of working in my classroom I can say it is finally finished and ready to go.  With a small classroom there is only so much I can do.

This is what you see as you enter from the front door.  I am excited to try out my new writing center.  You can get the pictures here.

I absolutely love my woodland pillows which I got at Wallgreens.  My kinders already love sitting in our cozy little library.

Here is a view as you walk into my classroom.  I used a Circut to cut out the woodland animals above the tables.

To add a more woodland look to my classroom I made tree branches out of butcher paper.  I got the template from School Girl style which you can find here. I use alternative seating in my classroom.  Three of my tables are low to the ground and I use the balls as well.  Instead of a carpet I use Sitspots.  These are amazing!
